San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica, offers a blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. If you fly into the city to start your Costa Rican adventures be sure to set aside for some must see things in San Jose. Here are some of the best things to do in San Jose during your visit.
National Museum of Costa Rica

Explore the country's history, archaeology, and cultural heritage at the National Museum of Costa Rica. The museum is housed in a historic military barracks with the opportunity to climb the old stone turrets and view some historic jail cells.
The remainder of the museum uses the historic building to display chronological exhibits paving the nation's history from the 16th century to the present time with artifacts, media, and descriptive text in both English and Spanish.
The museum is also home to a large enclosed butterfly garden and a collection of pre-Colombian stone artifacts.
Jade Museum (Museo del Jade)

This museum houses one of the world's largest collections of pre-Columbian jade artifacts. It provides insight into the rich cultural history of Costa Rica's indigenous people. The large museum has a permanent collection as well as space for temporary exhibits.
Teatro Nacional (National Theater)

Admire the stunning architecture of the National Theater, a cultural gem in San Jose. The best way to see all of the theatre is to take a guided tour. The inexpensive guided tour (often led by actors or other theatre people) is entertaining and enriching. The small group tours are offered in English or Spanish.
Alternatively, you could plan to attend a performance to appreciate the theatre’s beauty and history while enjoying a show.
If you’re only moderately interested, stepping into the coffee shop is free and gives you an idea of what you might expect during the full tour of the theatre.
Mercado Central

Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting the Mercado Central de San José. Here, you can shop for souvenirs, try traditional Costa Rican dishes, and experience the lively atmosphere.
It’s easy to get lost in the huge market filled with everything you could need or want. The narrow passageways allow you to move from stall to stall browsing for everything from tourist trinkets to professional cooking supplies.
Passionate foodies will find an endless array of tantalizing stalls featuring local cuisine cooked within view of the small seating areas hidden around the market.
Parque Nacional (National Park)

Enjoy a peaceful escape in the heart of the city at Parque Nacional. This park is a great place for a leisurely stroll, picnics, and people-watching.
At the heart of the park, you will find the National Monument of Costa Rica. The large bronze statue was erected in 1895 celebrating the nation’s Independence Day (Sept. 15th).
Despite being billed as a “national park” the park is only about the size of two city blocks and is easily visited in under 30 minutes.
Plaza de la Cultura

Explore the bustling Plaza de la Cultura, a central square surrounded by shops, cafes, and historical buildings. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The square is often bustling with locals shopping on the adjacent pedestrian-only shopping street Av. Central.
Here you may also encounter street performers playing traditional music, often with a modern or signature style on the performer. The square is also a jumping-off point for a visit to the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the National Theater of Costa Rica.

Barrio Amón

La Sabana Metropolitan Park

For outdoor activities, visit La Sabana Park, a large urban park where you can jog, have a picnic, or simply relax. The park’s central feature is the two large ponds where you can try to spot local birds and other wildlife. Numerous public art pieces (some, sadly in disrepair) are hidden throughout the park. For a few dollars, you can buy a kite and spend the afternoon taking flight.
The park also houses the Costa Rican Art Museum, which was closed during our visit. The museum looks to have an impressive collection of local and important art. We checked the website and the museum’s social media and there was no indication of why the museum was closed or a planned reopening date.
On the other side of the park, you will find the massive National Stadium Of Costa Rica home of the Costa Rica national football team (aka soccer). The stadium was the first modern stadium to be built in Central America.

However, if you don’t mind a drive, you can reach the beach from San Jose in as little as 90 minutes. The drive can be an opportunity to experience the diverse landscapes and attractions that Costa Rica has to offer, including lush rainforests, volcanoes, and picturesque towns along the way.
Jaco Beach
